It’s a start, but it is different! So this is part of the ‘new normal’? Maybe so or maybe not, but I think it’s on – A Zoom meeting for our club, the South Windsor Seniors!
Windsor’s Mayor, Drew Dilkins, approached our president, Barb Robson, in a letter. In the letter, he wrote, that he wanted to do something for South Windsor Seniors, so he proposed this meeting. Barb called me to give me a heads up that she sent me an email to distribute to our members with email, and here we are. Don’t be afraid to use Zoom. For this meeting, you just have click on the prompt that will come to you in an email – That’s It! It’s as simple as that. Then use the camera that probably came along with built in speakers with your laptop or tablet. Then the rest is even easier, just pick out a nice comfortable place to sit for the duration (of the meeting) and Bob’s your Father’s brother! What is more difficult is all the time before the meeting! Time that each one of us has to use to decide what questions to ask of Mr. Dilkins. What will you have to say? He has left it open to political questions or any other topic. Inge and I are really looking forward to this meeting, whenever it happens! While I was writing this, Barb called to let me know that that date has slipped a bit, from July 6 to July 9 or 10 and that she planned to call her contact with our numbers. Here goes . . . Yesterday, we were going to hear and see an old friend of the club’s, Marty Gervais, the former poet laurate of Windsor! Wow! What a day that would have been, except for the pandemic!
We never had that meeting. But, there was other news! Ford announced that places of worship could open, across Ontario. So, the churches started to prepare for opening. However, I was told that I had to stay home because my health is compromised. I’ll stay home and do what I’m told (Those are words that I never thought I’d say – before now, it was much more likely to be ‘full speed ahead’). Recently, I’ve written about the ‘new normal’ and what I think we all can expect. But, today it’s starting to happen, social distancing and all. The leaders of the various synagogues, mosques and churches, are all taking every precaution they can to keep us all safe, just as our health leaders have taught us – be cautious! Right now, there seems to be something else in the air. There is a sense of urgency, of perhaps, necessity, to open, or at least, partially open restaurants in Windsor – with or without the nod from Government, Provincial or Federal. A restaurant owner was on TV news last night, indicating that enough was enough, that it had become an issue of survival for her business and for many others like her’s. Time will tell, I guess we all will have to wait and see . . . Stay safe, stay well, get some fresh air if you can, and keep smiling . . . ‘til we meet again . . . It’s getting harder and harder to write. That is, to write something that people will find interesting enough to read, but here goes, anyway. It really comes down to finding something to write about. After that, the words come easy; they just pour out onto the page!
So, what to write about? Let’s try ‘Restrictions due to Covid-19’. Let’s list the topics, and then flesh them out:
Now the lockdown. In almost every part of the country, the nature of, and rules for, the lockdown will gradually open up as the various regions cautiously unroll their plans for ‘getting back to normal’ as if that were even possible. As far as that goes, we are already hearing that one major change will happen. It’s already become fairly certain that doctors will replace most patient visits with so-called virtual visits or, in most cases, simple phone calls. As restaurants gradually open, patios and outdoor dining first, it’s not really clear if their customer base will come back. Perhaps it’s just a matter of time. Who knows? What will churches be like? Premier Ford has allowed places of worship to open up. I got an email from Bedford United Church, saying that they were opening. I guess that I’ll go to church and find out. I wish that I had a crystal ball, or something like that, to see into the future. The first thing I know that I’ll look at is the virus and whether now is the right time to open up. I’ve got a feeling that it may be too soon, but that’s just me. On that note, I think I’ll call it a day . . . Stay safe, stay well, get some fresh air if you can, and keep smiling . . . ‘til we meet again . . . We were supposed to hear the Windsor Symphony Quartet play for us yesterday. I’ve heard them play two or three times before, and they’re really good! Oh well, chalk it up to Covid-19 and the restrictions.
By the way, the images showing so many protesters, marching without social or any other kind of distancing, in Amherstburg, were really frightening, even though I support the cause they’re marching for. All I could think of was, they could be all catching the virus, infecting other people, going home where older people live, or at the very least, overwhelming our health care system. I know that their cause is important, but these are anything but normal times. I think that over the years we have become more tolerant. At the end of the Great Depression and the beginning of the Second World War, racial prejudice was a lot worse – even churches were segregated. Anti-Semitism was present in too many lives and we all were taught to hate – hate the enemy – hate the Germans, hate the Japs, and maybe even the Italians – Wow! Is it any wonder then, that some hate managed to live on in some individuals? The important thing is that things, believe it or not, over the span of over 80 years, things got a little bit better – just a bit. Churches, for the most part, have de-segregated. (I had planned to list many advantages, but, frankly, I had a hard time to think of any others.) I don’t think that I can walk into a church ever again (even if I could) and not wonder who the next person whom the police, or somebody else in authority, will beat on or kill. To echo the Windsor Star, I was probably born on third base, but I don’t think I hit a triple – I’d be lucky if I hit a base hit! I can honestly say that the colour or nature of one’s skin never mattered to me. I always thought that it mattered a whole lot more what you said or did than what you looked like. But, I realize that what I think, or what I want, can’t change very much. For what it’s worth, let the change for the better start with me . . .
