August 30th, 2020

It really wasn’t a great week, as far as my plan goes. When it wasn’t raining, it got hot enough to virtually fry eggs on whatever didn’t move. But finally, the weather broke, and at the end of August, a beautiful fall-like day!
Today, I’m adding one item to my plan: speech therapy practice. In my initial sessions with Melissa, a speech pathologist, I received the book called ‘Speak Out!’ This book contains twenty-five lessons, which can serve as practice sessions. I plan to use the book and do one lesson per day.
So, my plan now looks like this:
  • Walk outside any day that it’s not raining and is under 28 degrees
  • Go to church any day that I can get a ride. (I don’t drive any more)
  • Do one lesson each day from ‘Speak Out!’
I think about it each day, and once a week, I’ll add another item to the plan. That’s my plan for carefully opening up. What do you plan to do? Think about it! Just get started . . .
Please be careful . . .
Stay safe, stay well, get some fresh air if you can, and keep smiling . . .
‘til we meet again . . .

Today I read about the Gross Domestic Product forecast being worse than expected and yesterday the news was that Covid-19 was expected to be around us for two years or more. So, what to do about it? We’ll just have to change a bit and, most of all – open up! I’m committed to change, so here goes!
Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Today is the day that I have decided that nothing is going to hold me back! I still don’t know how I can do everything, but I have some ideas. I think what is driving all this is that I’ve finally been cooped up so long that if I don’t do something about it, I’ll burst, or something.
I’ll need a careful plan. I decided about a month ago to quit driving, as Inge, my wife says, my reflexes are not the same as when I was a twenty-year-old. And, I think I told you my health is a bit compromised, so I’ll have to be a little more careful than most. So, all in all, I’ll need to plan, but to plan carefully.
I know that walking is about the best thing I can do, so the first step in my new plan is:
  • Walk outside any day that it’s not raining and is under 28 degrees
  • Go to church any day that I can get a ride.
That’s my plan. It’s not very challenging, but for me it’s enough to start with. I’ll let everyone know how it goes each week.
Please be careful . . .
Stay safe, stay well, get some fresh air if you can, and keep smiling . . .
‘til we meet again . . .

Today, August 16, was another day, just about like many other days since the order to go home and stay home, but different. I went to church for the first time today, and it was sort of the same, only a little bit different. I also went for a walk outside today, and it was a little bit different, too. It’s already August, and the rain today brought some of the fall flowers out!
I think the point I want to make, is that a lot of things are sort of the same, but we need to make them a little bit different – we have to be careful. I think the technical term is infection control – we have to practice infection control, as we open up.
The same experts that we listened to and saved a lot of grief say that Covid-19 is going to be with us a while, perhaps two years or even longer. With that prognosis, we have to open up! It would be so easy to stay safe, and stay home, but we can’t. We have to open, albeit carefully, and start doing most of the things we used to do, that is, before the pandemic.
After all, the same reasons that we did the things we did still exist. Perhaps, there may even be some new reasons. In any case, we just have to be careful. Careful to act like we are still in Stage 1, and practice all of the precautions, but we still have to venture out and do the things that we used to do.
So, think about it. Think about starting to open up, but open up carefully . . .
Please be careful . . .
Stay safe, stay well, get some fresh air if you can, and keep smiling . . .
‘til we meet again . . .

Hello everyone! I hope you all are healthy and happy, as are Inge and I!
The excitement is building as, just about everyone in Windsor waits anxiously to hear the ‘new case count’, and hopes it will be low enough that Stage 3 will really happen for us.
And that brings me to the big question. What will happen then?
The first thing that will probably happen when we go to Stage 3 is that the ‘new case count’ will again go up. There will be just enough people taking chances with Covid-19 that some are bound to get infected. That’s just the way that viral infections work. But we can’t stay locked up forever. Sooner or later we have to open up and get back to work. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t do it carefully.
Last month I told all of you about a risk mitigation tool that the Federal Health folks had posted on their website (I think it was the post before last). I think I’ll use it, at least for the first little while. This will be on my agenda each time I go out for a while. It can be found by entering Health Canada Risk Mitigation Tool in any search engine or browser. In any case, seniors like us will have to be careful.
Well, time will tell, as it always does. After a few days with very few new cases, all of a sudden we had seven by Saturday afternoon. All we can do is wait and see . . .
Please be careful . . .
Stay safe, stay well, get some fresh air if you can, and keep smiling . . .
‘til we meet again . . .

On Friday, if we had a regular meeting, we were going to hear Terri Davis Fitzpatrick, Coordinator of the Parade of Canadian Flags speak to us. Veterans’ Voices of Canada, Flags of Remembrance, is a Canada wide initiative to remember Veterans of the Canadian Forces.
Here we are, still at Stage 2, and I’m happy, still cooped up at home. This is our second house since Inge and I came back to Windsor. Just when we were all done fixing up our house on Felix, we had to move to the house where we now live because I couldn’t do stairs any more. So, here we are.
I say happy and still cooped up at home, and I really mean it! Tonight, on the 6PM News, we saw pictures of all of the people on the beach at Grand Bend. Wow! There were hundreds of people crowded together on the beach and the next shot was of the Mayor of Gran Bend, concerned over the fact that there were so many people and that nobody was socially distancing or following any of the other recommendations given by our leaders.
I guess I’m beginning to sound like a broken record! Even that phrase is a bit outdated – most kids now have never seen a record, let alone a broken one. But it’s more important than ever, that we stay the course, to follow all the recommendations – social distancing, hand washing, staying at home, and so on. It’s really important to stay the course and not give up!
Most of us have been cooped up at home and most of us are fed up. Sooner or later Covid-19 will only be a distant memory. Things will be at a ‘new normal’ whatever that will be. The lights will go on all over the world . . .
Please be careful . . .
Stay safe, stay well, get some fresh air if you can, and keep smiling . . .
‘til we meet again . . .
